Kayak polo is an on-the-water game that is similar to water polo and basketball. Two teams of five players paddle kayaks and dribble and pass a water polo ball. The objective of the game is to throw the ball through the goal of the opposing team. Players cannot paddle while holding onto the ball. They can only hold the ball for five seconds before they must pass or dribble. While one team passes the ball and tries to score, the other team defends their goal and tries to gain possession of the ball. It is great fun for kids of all ages (up to 90 years old!) and boats of every kind (even open canoes!).
Austin is home to several women's and men's polo teams. Since their inception, the teams have placed in the national polo championships!
Kayak polo is played weekly on Wednesday night at 6:30 pm underneath the Mopac bridge (Loop 1 and Town Lake).

Sure! While the teams play in special kayaks with special paddles and facemasks, you don't need special equipment to join in on the fun. Just bring your boat, paddle, PFD, and helmet, and join the game! Players are happy to teach you techniques and rules.
